JOANA GUSMÃO DE OLIVEIRA

Born in Lisbon in 1978, lives currently in the municipality of Oeiras. Biologist (FCUL, 2007) and Master in Conservation Biology, in the sector of Forensic Entomology (FCUL, 2008), she has experimented with several areas within biology, attending, among others, several courses in Environmental Education.

Interest in the São Tomé archipelago, where she resided for three years, prompted her search for bridges in the area of sustainable development before moving there. There, she was involved in various projects related to biology, in the capacitation of field guides and even in the management of a commercial establishment.

A travel lover, she has been working since 2011 at the Gulbenkian Institute of Science in purchasing management and procurement.

RUI MIGUEL CARVALHO

Born in Coimbra in 1982, he currently resides on Terceira Island, Azores. Biologist (University of Évora, 2006), is currently a PhD student at the University of the Azores. In his PhD project he seeks to understand the cause-effect relationship between pedestrian recreational activities and the Azorean native forest, to refine methodologies for their long-term monitoring, and to model the use-impact relationship of tourism in these forests, in order to simulate future scenarios and allow managers of these protected areas to anticipate problems.

Since 2005, he has collaborated in arthropod inventory protocols, namely the COBRA protocol, which he has already applied in about 30 locations, including in mainland Portugal, the Azores and Madeira archipelagos.

Having become aware of the disparity of knowledge between the scientific community and citizens, he created and directed an Environmental Education team, between 2008 and 2010, creating recreational activities for educational purposes. In April 2019, he won the FameLab National Science Communication Contest for a route of peaceful coexistence and respect for spiders, inviting the public to convert fear into curiosity.

ANDREIA ALBERNAZ VALENTE

Born in Lisbon in 1980, currently living in the municipality of Oeiras, is a biologist (FCUL, 2003) with postgraduate degrees in Conservation Biology (University of Évora) and Sustainable Agriculture (MAICh - Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Chania, Crete). She is, among others, illustrator, storyteller and artisan.

A strong artistic calling shaped her multidisciplinary professional career, which is reflected in an interconnection between science and art. She has worked in the area of science communication through theatre and the design of scientific games. Her works of free illustration seek the unexplored and refuse repetition, invariably starting from themes related to nature. The scientific rigor imposed by training, rather than spreading, gives it numerous degrees of creative freedom. She wrote the book A Different Heart, edited in support of preparation for pediatric cardiac thoracic surgery.

Recently she has been slowly plunging into the cinema, exploring animation, documentary and horror films.
